The Lynn Sage Breast Center at Northwestern University has had a multidisciplinary breast surgery fellowship since 1998. Two fellows are selected annually for this clinical experience. The fellowship was developed to enhance the basic knowledge in the management of breast disease from a multidisciplinary approach and is designed to prepare the trainee for a leadership role in multidisciplinary breast care in the academic or community setting with a focus on developing a career in academic breast oncology.
The program emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of modern breast care, and the need for incorporating patient education and participation in decision making into the treatment paradigm. The breast program is a designated component of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center which is the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the State of Illinois.
Case Volume
The Lynn Sage Breast Center sees more than 700 new breast cancer cases annually and the imaging portion of the center performs more than 47,000 studies and procedures each year.
Rotations
Trainees spend eight months in the Lynn Sage Center on surgical rotations with four fellowship-trained surgeons. This experience includes time spent in a high-risk clinic devoted to the evaluation and management of women at increased risk for breast cancer. Other rotations include breast imaging, pathology, outpatient medical oncology, radiation oncology, and plastic surgery.
Clinical Trials
We are active participants in multiple cooperative group clinical trials, and fellows actively participate in patient education and recruitment. An optional second year is available for those candidates who wish to expand their knowledge in translational or basic science research.
Meetings and Conferences
Didactic teaching occurs at the weekly multidisciplinary treatment planning conference and a monthly topic-based small group session exclusively for fellows. Fellows also attend the Lynn Sage Cancer Symposium, our annual meeting featuring international leaders in breast cancer, which attracts over 1000 attendees. All fellows are expected to complete at least one original academic project to submit for national presentation and publication.
Facilities
The Lynn Sage Breast Center is located in the Prentice Women’s Hospital at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Patients are seen in the breast surgery clinic space where there are 8 exam rooms and a procedure room. The patients now have the advantage of having all of their surgical care in the same building. They are evaluated on the 4th floor where the breast imaging department and the surgical clinic are both located; they undergo surgery on the 6th floor in the operating rooms and are admitted to the 14th floor where they can recuperate in beautiful private rooms. The clinical breast center staff includes 4 nurse clinicians, 2 physician assistants, and 4 data managers.
Eligibility
Prospective fellows must successfully complete a residency in general surgery. Applicants from outside the United States must have passed the USMLE, FMGEMS, TOEFL or FLEX, and must be ECFMG Certified as well as be able to secure a permanent Illinois State Medical license, Illinois State Controlled Substance License and DEA Certificate.
All application materials for the 2022 fellowship match must be received by the SSO by the application cutoff date.
