University of Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Fellowship

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Training Program Director: Julia Tchou, MD, PhD

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania

The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is a tertiary referral center and one of the original NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The Hospital is a perennial US News and World Report “Top Hospital” and is located in Philadelphia, PA which offers all the cultural amenities of a large northeastern city. The Rena Rowan Breast Center treats over 800 breast cancers annually and is located in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine which is a state-of-the-art 500,000 square foot outpatient facility.

Started in 2007, The University of Pennsylvania Breast Fellowship has trained fellows for positions in both academic medicine and private practice. It offers a diverse program in the management of breast diseases that will lead to clinical competence in all facets of breast biology. Currently the program is open to one fellow per year.

Clinical Rotations

The program is based in the Rena Rowan Breast Center and offers internationally recognized faculty in the diagnosis and treatment of breast disease.  Fellows rotate through Breast Imaging, Nuclear Medicine, Breast Surgery, Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Breast Cancer Genetics, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and Breast Pathology.  Fellows will have exposure to a large and diverse faculty group in each department providing a variety of educational opportunities.  With large patient volumes the fellow will have ample opportunity to develop clinical skills necessary for a career in breast surgery.  Fellows also rotate through the Pennsylvania hospital which is just 2 miles from the main campus.  Here they have additional opportunities for operative experience as well as ultrasound-guided and stereotactic core biopsies.

Research Opportunities

The fellowship has built in time for a scholarly pursuit with the availability of NIH sponsored programs in clinical, translational, and basic research programs with the faculty of the Breast Program at the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania. The program director will meet with the fellow early during the fellowship to design a customized research plan. The fellow will be expected, and supported, to pursue research projects that will be presented at national meetings.

Meetings and Conferences

The fellow will participate in the Breast Clinical Cancer Management Conference, a weekly multidisciplinary case conference, Journal Club, and Breast Research Conference. The fellow will be an integral component of these conferences. There are additional conferences available in clinical trial design, medical oncology, and Radiology/Pathology conference. There are also weekly morbidity and mortality conferences and grand rounds given through the Department of Surgery.

Eligibility

The program is open to surgical residents having completed a general surgery residency that is board certified or eligible. Residents from foreign countries must have completed USMLE to be eligible for licensure in the State of Pennsylvania.
