The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of New Mexico (UNM) is pleased to have achieved accreditation from the ACGME for a Fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO). UNM and its NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center serve as the region’s only tertiary and quaternary referral center. Our surgical faculty in combination with our colleagues in medical and radiation oncology, provide care for patients with the full spectrum of oncologic needs.
About the Program:
The UNM CGSO Fellowship program is a two-year post-general surgery residency training program. The program accepts one fellow per year. Over the 2 year period, fellows will gain experience in the comprehensive management of breast, melanoma, sarcoma, colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, endocrine, esophageal, lung, complex pelvic and peritoneal surface malignancies. In addition, the fellowship includes protected time for research as well as the required rotations in medical oncology, radiation oncology, and surgical pathology. The second year of training allows for electives where fellows are able to receive additional training in desired tumor areas.
The core Surgical Oncology faculty consist of six fellowship-trained surgeons with expertise in breast, melanoma, sarcoma, colorectal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, esophageal, complex pelvic and peritoneal surface malignancies. Fellows will also rotate with surgeons with advanced oncologic training in head and neck, endocrine, urologic, orthopedic, thoracic, and gynecologic malignancies. Surgical training will include the full breadth of open as well as minimally-invasive, including robotic, oncologic resections. As the sole academic hospital for the state of New Mexico, and the surrounding area, fellows will experience a high-volume, clinically robust training environment.
Research Opportunities:
CGSO fellows will be able to avail themselves of research resources available through the core CGSO faculty as well as the resources of the UNM NCI Comprehensive Cancer Center Research Programs and the UNM Clinical Translational Science Center (CTSC). Through these multiple entities, there are ample opportunities for basic, clinical, and translational research.
Meetings and Conferences:
Fellows will participate in numerous tumor-specific tumor boards, as well as other rotation-specific educational conferences. In addition, CGSO fellows will attend weekly morbidity and mortality conferences, surgical grand rounds, surgical oncology indications conference, and journal club. In conjunction with active faculty participation and guidance, fellows will have the opportunity to lead many of these conferences.
Eligibility and Applications:
The UNM CGSO program participates in the fellowship match through NRMP annually and accepts one fellow per year. Applications must be submitted through ERAS. The following criteria should be met prior to appointment at UNM:
-Satisfactory completion of a general surgery residency program accredited by the ACGME or general surgery residency program located in Canada that is accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
