The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Louisville offers a two-year surgical oncology fellowship for general surgeons who seek advanced training in surgical oncology. The primary goal of the fellowship is to foster the growth of young surgical oncologists that desire a career in academic medicine. One fellow is selected annually for this ACGME accredited program.

Meetings and Conferences

The weekly conference schedule is designed to maximize the educational value while maintaining efficiency. The department of surgery holds weekly conferences including morbidity & mortality, grand rounds, and a didactic conference. Conferences specific to oncology include hepato-pancreato-biliary tumor board, GI tumor conference, breast conference, and sarcoma conference. In addition, the Division of Surgical Oncology conducts a didactic teaching conference specifically designed to further understanding of advanced oncologic principles.

Research Opportunities

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Louisville enjoys a rich history of research productivity. Teaching the surgical oncology fellows how to conduct meaningful research is a top priority of the program. The fellows have conducted important basic science and clinical research, presented these findings at national meetings, and published manuscripts in top journals. Each fellow spends four months conducting basic science research at the beginning of the fellowship. Upon completion of the fellowship, fellows will have the tools necessary to become an accomplished surgical investigator. In addition, fellows are given an opportunity to enroll in an MSc in Clinical Investigation Sciences Degree program taught at the University of Louisville and gain in-depth knowledge and expertise in trial design and implementation.

Clinical Rotations

The 20 months of clinical rotations that compose the surgical oncology fellowship provide extensive exposure to all areas of general surgical oncology. The faculty has expertise in treating patients afflicted with a wide range of malignancies, and the fellows reap the benefits of this experience. This is the cornerstone of our surgical oncology fellowship. The fellows will encounter and treat many patients with complex malignancies in a close, personal setting and develop one-on-one relationships with the faculty. It is these relationships that foster growth in judgment and clinical excellence. Each fellow gains extensive operative experience in breast, melanoma, sarcoma, liver, pancreas, esophagus, and other GI cancers while at the University of Louisville.

Eligibility and Application

Applicants for the University of Louisville fellowship must complete an ACGME accredited general surgery residency in the United States or an RCPSC or CFPC accredited general surgery residency in Canada.
