SSO Announces New Publishing Director

The Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO) shares the news of the retirement of our Editorial Office leader, Deb Whippen. Since joining SSO in 2006, Deb has been a dedicated and visionary leader whose commitment and expertise have played a critical role in strengthening our journals and advancing the Society’s mission. In recognition of her many contributions, Deb will receive the 2026 James Ewing Layperson’s Award. We hope you will join us in celebrating her at the SSO Annual Meeting in Phoenix, March 5–7. We wish Deb restful days ahead and many exciting travels in retirement.

After  a comprehensive search, the SSO Board of Directors has appointed Jennifer Mahar, as Publishing Director. Jen brings more than 30 years of experience in publication management and a deep understanding of editorial operations. We are excited about the future of the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Surgical Oncology Insight under her leadership.

The Publications Department is now fully integrated with the SSO and includes:

  • Jennifer Mahar, Publishing Director
  • Julie Smith, Editorial Manager
  • Michael Ray, Editorial Coordinator
  • Franki Cohen, Editorial Assistant
  • Daniel Yaroshevich, Editorial Assistant

On behalf of the Board of Directors and all SSO members, we extend our sincere gratitude to Deb for her exceptional service and wish her all the best in retirement. We also warmly welcome Jennifer and the Publications Team as they continue to support and advance SSO’s scholarly publications.
