About the Program

The HonorHealth Breast Surgery Fellowship offers a one-year fellowship in the care of patients with both benign and malignant diseases of the breast.

The partnership between HonorHealth and Arizona State University’s (ASU) School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering provides fellows with unique opportunities to integrate advanced information technology into patient care such as the use of AI-powered diagnostics and imaging innovations developed through ASU’s expertise in medical engineering.

HonorHealth Academic Affairs provides fellows with access to state-of-the-art simulation facilities and equipment, supporting diverse, high-quality training experiences.

We focus on oncoplastics taught by breast surgeons, offering a unique perspective. Training is provided in:

    • Rotational flaps
    • Intercostal perforator flaps
    • Therapeutic reduction mammoplasty
    • Contralateral symmetrization procedures
    • Goldilocks mastectomies

Rotation Schedule

The program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, preparing fellows for independent practice. Rotations include breast surgery, oncology specialties, radiology, pathology, genetics, rehabilitation, plastic surgery, psychosocial care, palliative medicine, outreach, and research.

Fellows also participate in an independent weekly clinic, evaluating and managing benign and malignant breast conditions, performing risk assessments, counseling patients, developing treatment plans, and providing follow‑up care, including surgery. Dedicated time is provided throughout the year for faculty‑supported research.

Research

HonorHealth supports the scholarly growth of fellows through robust research training and resources. Fellows complete required human subjects training and receive IRB access at program start. Academic Affairs hosts bi‑monthly grand rounds featuring expert speakers on topics such as AI, Bayesian methods, and clinical research ethics.

The ResQIPS Program provides end‑to‑end support for research, quality improvement, and patient safety projects, complemented by access to medical libraries, biostatistics, IRB guidance, data support, and opportunities for clinical research through the HonorHealth Research and Innovation Institute.

Didactic Sessions

Fellows participate in hands-on workshops and multidisciplinary conferences designed to enhance clinical and collaborative skills. Educational sessions include simulation-based training in sentinel lymph node biopsy, oncoplastic surgery techniques, breast reconstruction, and radiologic‑pathologic correlation. Monthly multidisciplinary conferences feature interactive tumor boards, radiology‑pathology rounds, and psycho‑oncology discussions, fostering integrated, patient‑centered care across specialties.

Location

The Phoenix metropolitan area offers an exceptional quality of life for learners and their families. Set in the Sonoran Desert, the region supports an active, wellness‑focused lifestyle with parks, lakes, and extensive hiking and biking trails. Phoenix is also a center for sports, arts, and culture, home to professional and collegiate teams, museums, theaters, and renowned art galleries. With a strong emphasis on well‑being and easy access to mountain recreation in nearby Flagstaff, the area provides a vibrant and well‑rounded environment for learning and living.
