Getting the Most Out of the SSO Website

By: Camille Stewart, MD and Kristin Rojas, MD

The SSO website has been updated to offer many new features to our members, with some specific to new members and trainees. Some may be unfamiliar with how to access information most relevant to their career stage and practice. Below we have provided you with the direct links to some of these new features.

Saw a groundbreaking research presentation at the Annual Cancer Symposium last year and want to revisit the results? The ExpertED@SSO online learning platform has virtual meetings (categorized by individual presentation) available to peruse. Go to the main ExpertED@SSO home page at: experted.www.surgonc.org (or  https://experted.surgonc.org/topclass/topclass.do?login) and login to see your “Learning Center” where these virtual meetings are available. Please note that the SSO 2019 Virtual Meeting will be available free of charge to members after March 1, 2020.

The Learning Center also has the Fellows Webinar Series! The archived webinars can be accessed through ExpertED@SSO or through this link directly: https://surgonc.org/fellows/national-video-conference-series/.

Want to check out the newest podcast from Annals of Surgical Oncology (ASO), “Speaking of SurgOnc”? Stream the latest episode by visiting the ASO section of the website: https://surgonc.org/annals/speaking-of-surgonc/.  Some recent topics include the updated 8the edition of the AJCC Cancer Staging Manual and an episode on how a modified frailty index predicts morbidity and mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy. Most of the podcasts are about 10 minutes long- perfect for the drive to work or for listening in the gym.

For a quick link to register for SSO 2020, March 25-28 in Boston, MA, https://show.jspargo.com/sso20/, where you will also find housing information and registration for pre-meeting courses, along with the program. Don’t forget to tag #SSO2020 in all of your SSO 2020 social media posts!

The new My SSO Community platform, available both through ExpertED@SSO and the SSO site, offers an online platform for discussion boards. The direct link is here: https://experted.surgonc.org/topclass/topclass.do?expand-news-viaTC=1-newsId=444785-from=UserWelcome. Login and click “Join the conversation now”. Don’t forget to say hello to your Fellows and Young Attendings Subcommittee Members at SSO 2020. This year we are updating the SSO mentorship program, as well as adding to the existing educational opportunities specific to fellows and young attendings. We are looking forward to continuing to advocate for you and provide resources for success in your training and early careers.
