The American Society for Radiation Oncology recently published, Definitive and Postoperative Radiation Therapy for Basal and Squamous Cell Cancers of the Skin: Executive Summary of an American Society for Radiation Oncology Clinical Practice Guideline. SSO played an essential role in the development of this Guideline through the representation of SSO Member, Mary Sue Brady, MD as a contributing author and several SSO peer reviewers.
The Guideline addresses five key areas: 1.) Indications for definitive radiation therapy (RT), 2.) Indications for postoperative RT, 3.) Indications for RT for treating regional nodes and regional disease management, 4.) Radiation techniques and dose-fractionation schedules for primary site management, and 5.) Use of chemotherapy, biologic, and immunotherapy agents before, during or after RT. Several recommendations are provided and, in some cases, when data was limited, expert opinions are provided. For a summary of the Guideline, please refer to the ASTRO News Release.
