About the Program
The AdventHealth Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program offers an outstanding clinical experience within the AdventHealth Cancer Institute. The one-year fellowship provides focused, multidisciplinary training in the management of benign and malignant breast disease.
The fellow spends approximately six months on the breast surgical oncology service with attending breast surgeons who perform over 2,000 breast cancer operations annually. Clinical experience includes time in the operating room, outpatient clinics, and Breast Multidisciplinary Clinics alongside our breast medical oncologists and radiation oncologists. Dedicated administrative and academic time is provided each month while on service.
The fellow rotates through key specialties involved in breast cancer care, including breast surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, breast imaging, plastic and reconstructive surgery, genetics, survivorship and high‑risk care, psycho‑oncology, and lymphedema therapy. During the surgical rotation, the fellow gains experience in all aspects of breast cancer surgery, including advanced oncoplastic techniques, nipple-sparing mastectomy, and axillary lymph node dissection with immediate lymphovenous bypass.
In addition to clinical training, the fellow gains foundational knowledge in the administrative and operational aspects of a breast surgery practice, with a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and community outreach. This reflects AdventHealth Orlando’s commitment to comprehensive, whole-person cancer care.
The fellow is supported by a strong cancer quality infrastructure that reflects AdventHealth’s commitment to excellence in breast cancer care, multidisciplinary collaboration, and continuous improvement. The breast program participates in nationally recognized accreditation and quality programs, including the Commission on Cancer, National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers, ACR Breast Imaging, and ACR Radiation Oncology.
This work is further supported by a dedicated cancer quality team, including quality nursing leadership and analytics support, to ensure ongoing monitoring of accreditation standards, quality measures, outcomes, and performance improvement opportunities. This infrastructure allows the fellow to train in an environment where high-quality clinical care is paired with data-driven review, accountability, and continuous quality improvement.
Breast cancer quality measures are routinely benchmarked against state and national accredited program comparison groups. While performance varies by measure and reporting period, our results remain competitive with peer accredited programs and reflect our sustained commitment to evidence-based, patient-centered breast cancer care.

Clinical Research
The AdventHealth Cancer Institute is actively advancing cancer care through a robust portfolio of clinical trials focused on innovative diagnostics and treatments.
The Breast Program is currently enrolling into 16 active breast clinical trials with 43 patients enrolled to date. In 2025, the Breast Program entered 2.79% of breast cancer patients into clinical trials, contributing 17 research abstracts presented at leading national and international meetings, including ASCO, SABCS, and ESMO, and resulting in several peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals.
AdventHealth Orlando is proud to be the #1 enrollment site in the U.S. for the Merck Phase 1 trial, MK‑2870‑010, enrolling 12 participants. The program was also recognized for having the most diverse participant enrollment across the U.S. Phase 1 study, reflecting a strong commitment to inclusive, high-impact research.
In addition, the fellow has the opportunity to participate in several in-house clinical research studies that may lead to conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
The Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program provides the fellow with structured research support through AdventHealth’s Research Concierge Process. This process is designed to help fellows move scholarly work from early concept development through project completion and dissemination.
Fellows receive guidance from the Academic Mentor Manager and the GME Research Director, who help connect them with the appropriate resources at each stage of the research pathway. Support begins with idea development and continues through project planning, study intake, data access, analysis, and final dissemination.
Additional resources include medical library services, research data analytics, biostatistics support, and assistance with study intake. Together, these services help fellows develop feasible research projects, access needed data, strengthen study design and analysis, and prepare scholarly work for presentation or publication.
